Castle of Monsanto
Monsanto, Portugal, Portugal
Castle of Monsanto is a medieval fortress overlooking the unique boulder-strewn village of Monsanto in Idanha-a-Nova, central-eastern Portugal, built in the 12th century by the Knights Templar on prehistoric and Roman settlement remains to defend the eastern border along the Ponsul River.
Constructed by 1171 under Gualdim Pais following King Afonso Henriques' donation, it received a foral charter modeled on Ávila and Évora, with an irregular terrain-adapted plan featuring high granite walls, quadrangular towers, a central keep known as Torre do Pião or Atalaia, a cistern, and access stairs, later reinforced in the 14th-15th centuries under Dinis, Fernando, and John I amid civil wars and Castilian threats.
Adapted for artillery in the 17th century with batteries and earthenworks during conflicts like the 1704 Franco-Spanish siege, it partially exploded in the 19th century, surviving as ruins with a 17th-century chapel, Clock Tower (Lucano Tower) housing a replica Silver Rooster trophy from 1938, and national monument status since 1948 amid Portugal's Historic Villages.
