The Castle of Montemor-o-Velho crowns a hilltop in Montemor-o-Velho, Portugal, overlooking the Mondego River valley as one of the nation's oldest fortresses, with roots tracing to the 9th century during the Reconquista when Ramiro I of Asturias captured it from Muslim forces.

Frequently contested between Christians and Muslims—lost to Almanzor in 990, retaken by Mendo Luz around 1006, and secured definitively after Fernando Magno's 1064 conquest of Coimbra—it was rebuilt by Alfonso VI of Castile, then reinforced under Afonso Henriques, Sancho I, and later royals like D. Teresa amid family disputes and strategic needs. 

Infantas Teresa and Mafalda converted parts into a manor house, while Prince Peter expanded it as a palace; a 12th-13th century keep tower, 14th-century outer walls, barbican, and Santa Maria da Alcáçova church highlight its Gothic evolution, though damaged over time and restored since 1910 as a national monument.
