Castle of Moura
Moura, Portugal, Portugal
Castle of Moura in Moura, Portugal, originated as an Iron Age fort successively occupied by Romans, Visigoths, and Muslims who built mid-11th to early 12th-century rammed-earth fortifications including the Torre da Salúquia, establishing it as the regional capital of Al-Manijah.
Rebuilt by early 14th-century Portuguese kings on a 184-meter limestone spur dominating the Ardila River tributaries, it features an oval citadel with Gothic rectangular keep tower—housing the vaulted Sala dos Alcaides—flanked by towers, elbow gate, and external barbican walls enclosing a Dominican convent church with Manueline tombs of legendary conquerors Pedro and Álvaro Rodrigues from 1166.
Modernized in the 17th-century Restoration War with star-shaped bastions by Nicolau de Langres and a 19th-century clock tower, its ruins blend medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque defenses as a preserved border landmark.
