Castle of Noudar
Portugal, Portugal
Castle of Noudar in Barrancos municipality, Beja district, Portugal, occupies a Chalcolithic hilltop site later fortified by Muslims around the 10th-11th centuries as a taipa watchtower controlling routes near the Guadiana and Spanish border.
Founded in 1307-1308 under King Dinis by Master of Avis Lourenço Afonso—who built the castle, walls, and settled the village—it changed hands repeatedly between Portugal and Castile through wars and treaties like Monção (1386), serving frontier defense until abandonment by 1825.
Its rectangular schist enclosure with keep tower, cisterns, and church ruins—classified a National Monument in 1910—stands isolated amid montado landscapes, revealing prehistoric to medieval layers via 1980s-1990s excavations.
