Castle of Ouguela
Portugal, Portugal
Castle of Ouguela near Campo Maior, Portugal, occupies a pre-Roman hilltop site elevated 260 meters above sea level on the Alentejo plain, later Roman Budva and Visigothic Niguela before Moorish control until 1219 reconquest.
Rebuilt around 1310 under King Dinis—who granted a charter in 1298 after the Treaty of Alcanices—and further fortified by King Fernando, it features medieval granite and schist walls with seven quadrangular towers including the menagem tower.
Modernized during the 1640 Restoration Wars by engineer Nicolau de Langres with bastions, revelins, a moat, and large cistern, the hexagonal irregular stronghold overlooks the Spanish castle of Albuquerque across the border amid enduring frontier conflicts.
