Castle of Paderne
Portugal, Portugal
Castle of Paderne, near Albufeira in Portugal's Algarve, is a rare surviving example of 12th-13th century Almohad Muslim military rammed-earth (taipa) architecture, built as a rural stronghold on a strategic hill overlooking the Quarteira River valley to control inland-coastal routes between Silves and Loulé.
Its trapezoidal enclosure housed a planned village with narrow orthogonal streets, central-patio houses, a sewer system, robust walls, an L-shaped gate protected by an albarrã watchtower, and two cisterns marking Islamic and later Christian phases after Paio Peres Correia's 1248 conquest.
Abandoned by the 16th century as populations shifted downhill, damaged by the 1755 earthquake, and restored in the 20th century, its reddish ruins—one of seven castles on Portugal's flag—evoke the Reconquista's turbulent frontier history.
