Castle of Penedono
Penedono, Portugal, Portugal
The Castle of Penedono crowns a rocky hilltop at 930 meters in Penedono, Portugal, with first records from 960 AD when noblewoman D. Flâmula donated it to Guimarães Monastery amid early Reconquista defenses, enduring invasions like Almanzor's in 987 before reconquest by Fernando I of León around 1055-1057.
Its current irregular heptagonal Gothic-Romanesque form, featuring granite-schist walls, merlons with arrow slits, machicolations, corner buttresses, a southwest arched gate between slender towers, polygonal cistern, and patrol path, stems from 15th-century reconstruction tied to King Manuel I's 1512 charter, blending military fortress with noble residence.
Falling into ruin by the 19th century, it underwent restorations from 1949 onward and was classified a National Monument in 1910, linked to legends of knight Álvaro Gonçalves Coutinho, the "Magriço," celebrated in Camões' The Lusíadas.
