Castle of Penela
Portugal, Portugal
Castle of Penela is a medieval fortress in Penela, Coimbra district, central Portugal, perched on a granite hill as part of the Mondego defensive line established during the 11th-12th century Reconquista.
Founded around 1064 by Sesnando Davides after Coimbra's conquest and rebuilt by King Afonso Henriques circa 1140, it features an irregular polygonal layout adapted to the terrain, with walls up to 19 meters high blending Romanesque, Gothic, and Manueline styles, including a 14th-century outer ring of twelve towers (four surviving), a 15th-century Clock Tower evolving from the original donjon, and gates like the northeastern Porta da Traição with its elbow-slit Muslim-influenced design.
Further enhanced under Sancho I and Dinis with a menagem tower and village walls, it declined after strategic shifts post-1147, suffering 1755 earthquake losses, and was classified a National Monument in 1910, now offering panoramic views of Serra da Lousã.
