Castle of Pombal
Pombal, Portugal, Portugal
Castle of Pombal is a medieval fortress in Pombal, Leiria district, central Portugal, built on a former Roman castro and Arab stronghold site.
Around 1128, King Afonso Henriques donated it to the Knights Templar, led by Gualdim Pais, who constructed the Romanesque structure between 1155-1171 as a key defense along the Mondego River frontier during the Reconquista against Muslim forces.
It features robust walls, towers including a prominent keep from 1171, and Manueline additions like battlements from King Manuel I's era, later transitioning to the Order of Christ in 1353. Severely damaged by French troops under General Ney in 1811 during the Peninsular War, it was restored in the 20th century, classified as a National Monument, and now houses a museum in the keep while overlooking the town.
