Castle of Redondo
Redondo, Portugal, Portugal
Castelo de Redondo in Redondo, Portugal, was ordered built by King D. Dinis around 1312-1319 atop possible Roman ruins, following Afonso III's 1250 charter, as part of Alentejo's northern defenses with an oval curtain wall enclosing the village.
It features four rounded corner turrets, two main Gothic-arched towered gates—Porta da Ravessa (northeast, with medieval measurement marks) and Porta do Postigo (southwest, Manueline-enhanced with Vasco Coutinho's arms)—a 23-meter Manueline keep tower (Torre de Menagem northwest), the Torre da Alcaidaria (southeast), and a sundial on the parapet.
Restored intermittently from 1920 by DGEMN including 1943 wall repairs and 1962 gate consolidation, classified a National Monument in 1946, its ruins integrate local buildings like the Misericórdia Hospital and Nossa Senhora da Anunciação church amid the strategic Évora-Estremoz-Monsaraz-Portel line.
