Castle of Salir (ruins)
Salir, Portugal, Portugal
Castle of Salir ruins in Salir, Portugal, form a 12th-century Almohad fortress strategically positioned in the Algarve's barrocal region between coast and mountains to shield rural settlements from intensifying Christian assaults, notably after the 1189 conquest by King Sancho I.
Captured between 1248-1250 by the Order of Santiago under Paio Peres Correia amid King Afonso III's Algarve campaign, it was burned, rebuilt twice, and integrated into Christian defenses with surviving rammed-earth walls up to five meters thick, four rectangular towers like the "Muro Maior" and "Alfarrobeira," silos, drainage channels, kitchens, and houses.
Declining after the 14th century as focus shifted seaward, damaged by the 1755 earthquake and stone quarrying, archaeological digs since 1987 unveiled its Islamic daily life before it became a protected cultural landmark.
