Castle of Santo Estêvão
Portugal, Portugal
Castle of Santo Estêvão is a medieval fortress in the parish of Santo Estêvão, Chaves municipality, Vila Real district, northern Portugal, overlooking the Tâmega River valley near the Spanish border. Likely built around 1160 during Afonso Henriques' reign to secure Portuguese independence against León, it was captured by Castile's Alfonso IX in 1212, held for 19 years, and returned in 1231 via the Peace of Sabugal. King Afonso III granted it a charter in 1258; it hosted royal events like his 1253 meeting with bride Beatriz and Dinis I awaiting Isabel of Aragon. Today, only a robust granite keep tower remains—quadrangular, 14m tall with three floors, merlons, and first-floor access—classified as a National Monument since 1939, alongside the adjacent Matriz Church.
