Castle of São Ramão
Portugal, Portugal
Castle of São Ramão is a medieval rock castle situated on an isolated hilltop in the parish of Viade de Baixo e Fervidelas, Montalegre municipality, Vila Real district, northern Portugal, overlooking the Rabagão River. Possibly linked to Roman origins with nearby ancient roads to Braga, it was documented as a royal estate called S. Romanus in 1258 inquiries and described in 1758 parish records as an ancient, impregnable ruin near Parafita. Today, heavily destroyed remnants include two encircling wall lines, a rock-cut ditch, a tower, a granite cistern, and ashlar foundations of homes, with medieval pottery and coins found archaeologically; it holds Site of Public Interest status.
