Castle of Sernancelhe
Sernancelhe, Portugal, Portugal
The Castle of Sernancelhe is a medieval ruin in Sernancelhe, Viseu district, Portugal, guarding the Távora River mouth near the Serra da Lapa on a site with Neolithic and Roman origins.
First documented in 960 AD when noblewoman D. Flâmula willed its sale alongside Ribadouro Castle, it fell to Almanzor's Moorish forces late 10th century before reconquest by León's Fernando I around 1055, receiving its initial charter on October 26, 1124 (confirmed by Afonso II in 1220) and a Manueline renewal in 1514.
Rebuilt in granite by the Knights Hospitaller during the Reconquista, it survives today as crenellated walls and the Porta do Sol gate amid unclassified ruins adjacent to landmarks like the Casa do Padre.
