Castle of Trancoso
Trancoso, Portugal, Portugal
Castle of Trancoso crowns the historic town of Trancoso in Guarda district, northeastern Portugal, with origins tracing to a 10th-century Moorish outpost conquered around 1160 by King Afonso Henriques during the Reconquista.
Donated to the Knights Templar in 1173, it gained Romanesque walls and a menagem tower from a pre-Romanesque Moorish structure, later vastly expanded by King Dinis from 1282 with Gothic urban planning, monumental gates like Porta d'El-Rei bearing his arms, Porta do Prado, and eleven towers across double enclosures.
Its polygonal layout, quadrangular towers with pyramidal merlons, and central courtyard endured until 16th-century decline as military needs waned, now a national monument and UNESCO tentative site preserving medieval atmosphere with panoramic views.
