Castle of Valongo
Portugal, Portugal
Castle of Valongo, located near Évora in Portugal's Alentejo region, originated from possible Roman or earlier foundations and was first documented in the late 13th century, with major reconstruction in the late 14th or early 15th century as a strategic frontier defense during the Christian Reconquista.
This small medieval fortress blends Gothic and Manueline styles in a square layout with four angular square towers, crenellated battlements, narrow arrow slits, a prominent keep tower featuring three vaulted floors accessed by a spiral staircase, and 16th-century additions like pointed roofs and bay windows.
Classified as a National Monument since 1910, it passed through noble hands including the Marquesses of Valada before private 19th-century ownership, underwent repairs in 1989, and remains well-preserved atop a rural hill overlooking the Ribeira de Valongo despite isolation.
