Castle of Veiros
Portugal, Portugal
Castle of Veiros in Veiros near Estremoz, Portugal, stems from a village reconquered in 1217 under King Afonso II and granted to the Order of Avis, with its keep tower initiated on May 20, 1308, by Master D. Lourenço Afonso and builder Pero Abrolho during King Dinis's reign.
This Gothic medieval fortress adopts a trapezoidal plan on schist masonry with granite-marble elements, originally nine cuboidal towers along two-meter-thick walls topped by a walkway, and four cardinal gates—three surviving (North with broken arch possibly Muslim-era, South, West), each flanked by cylindrical towers, while the eastern one became a clock tower by the 18th century.
Adapted under Afonso VI for Restoration War artillery with ramps, esplanades, and solid parapets replacing battlements, it now stands partially ruined as a Property of Public Interest amid the Alentejo landscape.
