Castle Pinhel
Portugal, Portugal
Castle Pinhel is a medieval fortress in Pinhel, Guarda district, northeastern Portugal, strategically positioned at 600 meters elevation as a key stronghold in the regional defense line alongside Trancoso, Marialva, and Castelo Mendo during the Reconquista.
Its oval granite walls, originally featuring six gates like Porta de Santiago and six square towers (two surviving), enclose the historic center, with the prominent eastern Torre de Menagem built by King Dinis and reformed under Manuel I, showcasing Manueline details like rib-vaulted halls, armillary spheres, cruciform loopholes, and naturalistic twin windows.
Three internal cisterns ensured water supply during sieges, and it endured French occupation in 1810 before partial ruin, now a national monument offering panoramic Côa Valley views.
