Castle Roche
Republic of Ireland, Ireland
Castle Roche is a Norman castle located about 10 km northwest of Dundalk in County Louth, Ireland.
Built in 1236 by Lady Rohesia de Verdun, the granddaughter of the de Verdun family who arrived in Ireland in 1185, it stands on a dramatic rocky outcrop offering extensive views of the surrounding countryside. The castle was constructed to fortify Rohesia’s lands and features a unique triangular layout with strong defensive walls, a great hall reputed to have been up to three stories high, and a twin-towered gatehouse.
A well-known local legend tells of Lady Rohesia pushing her new husband out of a window after a wedding banquet, a window now known as the "Murder Window," which is said to be haunted by his ghost. Castle Roche historically marked the boundary between the Gaelic province of Ulster and the Anglo-Norman Pale and was involved in numerous conflicts, including being besieged and ruined during the Cromwellian conquest in 1641.
Today, it is a striking, largely ruined monument that offers a glimpse into Ireland's medieval past amid picturesque landscapes. Access is via farmland, and visitors should exercise caution due to rough terrain and steep drops.
