Castleisland is a market town in eastern County Kerry, known for its exceptionally wide main street and its role as a commercial center for the surrounding region.

The town takes its name from a castle built in 1226 by Geoffrey de Marisco. The fortress stood on an artificial island created by diverting the River Maine into a moat around it, giving rise to the name “Castle of the Island.”

The castle later became an important stronghold of the powerful Fitzgerald family, although only limited ruins survive today. Today, Castleisland is a lively community with a rich heritage, blending medieval history with modern local life.
