Castleisland
Republic of Ireland, Ireland
Castleisland is a market town in eastern County Kerry, known for its exceptionally wide main street and its role as a commercial center for the surrounding region.
Located between Tralee and Killarney, it has long been an important crossroads connecting different parts of southwest Ireland. The town takes its name from a castle built in 1226 by Geoffrey de Marisco. The fortress stood on an artificial island created by diverting the River Maine into a moat around it, giving rise to the name “Castle of the Island.”
The castle later became an important stronghold of the powerful Fitzgerald family, although only limited ruins survive today. Today, Castleisland is a lively community with a rich heritage, blending medieval history with modern local life. Its historical significance, traditional character, and central location make it an important cultural and commercial hub within County Kerry.
