Castlelyons
Ireland, Ireland
Castlelyons is a historic village in eastern County Cork, Ireland, located along the River Bride about 6 km south of Fermoy.
Its name comes from the ancient Uí Liatháin kingdom, whose stronghold once stood in the area, reflecting the village’s early medieval origins. Despite its small size, Castlelyons is rich in heritage and is known for having several important historical sites, including the ruins of Barrymore Castle, the former seat of the Earls of Barrymore, and the well-preserved remains of a Carmelite friary founded in the early 14th century.
The village also played a role in Irish history during the 1645 Battle of Castlelyons and remains notable for its historic churches, abbeys, bridges, and other archaeological landmarks. Today, Castlelyons combines a strong sense of community with a remarkable concentration of medieval and religious heritage.
