Castletroy
Republic of Ireland, Ireland
Castletroy is a large and rapidly growing suburb on the eastern side of Limerick City, located along the banks of the River Shannon.
Its name comes from Castle Troy, also known as the Black Castle, a medieval fortress whose ruins still stand in the area and reflect its long history of settlement. Historically a rural district centred on the villages of Annacotty and Monaleen, Castletroy remained largely undeveloped until the late 20th century. The establishment of the University of Limerick in the 1970s transformed the area, leading to significant residential, educational, and commercial growth.
Today, Castletroy is one of the most vibrant parts of Limerick, known for its university campus, technology park, shopping facilities, schools, and recreational amenities. Despite its modern development, the area retains links to its medieval and ancient past through local archaeological sites and the remains of Castle Troy.
