Centro de Ciência de Luanda
Luanda, Luanda Province, Angola
The Centro de Ciência de Luanda (CCL) is a large science center located in the heart of Luanda, Angola, along the Marginal Avenue, near the Fortaleza de São Miguel. This unique institution is dedicated to promoting scientific and technological knowledge among people of all ages.
CCL opened to the public in early 2024, after years of careful planning and restoration work. The center is housed in a beautifully renovated former soap factory. It covers a total area of about 18,000m², with 8,000m² of built space and around 6,000m² devoted to interactive and immersive exhibitions. CCL stands out as a leading science center in Africa, offering facilities that are uncommon elsewhere on the continent.
The science center features seven main permanent exhibitions. These include Fábrica Infinita, MIM, UAU, ETU, DOING, POP, and Fábrica de Sabão, as well as temporary exhibitions such as one on dinosaurs. Each exhibition is designed to offer hands-on, fun learning experiences, making use of about 250 interactive exhibits and dozens of science kits.
Besides the main galleries, CCL boasts a state-of-the-art planetarium, a butterfly garden, a science kitchen, laboratories, a mediatheque, a large-format cinema auditorium, multipurpose rooms, and even outdoor modules for activities. It also has a café and shop for visitors.
The center’s mission is to raise scientific literacy and curiosity in Angola. It runs educational programs, hosts guided visits for schools, and organizes public events such as workshops, talks, and science fairs. Special programs like "Ciência Sobre Rodas" take science activities to other parts of the country, helping reach a wider audience and inspire future generations of Angolan scientists.
CCL is open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00AM to 5:00PM. Entry prices vary depending on the exhibition or activity, but there are discounts and free admission for young children, seniors, teachers, and students from educational institutions.
