Cetatea Almașului
Almașu, Romania, Romania
Cetatea Almașului, near Almașu village in Sălaj County, Romania, was likely built between 1247-1278 under royal judge Paul Geregye as a powerful medieval stronghold dominating the surrounding hills. First documented in 1370 when donated by King Louis the Great to the Bebek family, it changed hands through noble families like Pongrácz, Corvin, Balassa, and Csáky, enduring multiple sieges until destroyed by Tatars in 1658 and imperial forces earlier. Its stones were later reused for local manors like Csáky Castle, leaving today only overgrown ruins of walls, towers, and a donjon amid scenic trails, awaiting potential tourism revival.
