Cetatea Chioarului
Romania, Romania
Cetatea Chioarului, located near Remetea Chioarului in Maramureș County, Romania, is a medieval fortress first documented in 1319 on a hill above the Lăpuș River at around 500 meters altitude, built possibly over Dacian foundations as a strategic stronghold possibly constructed after the 1241 Mongol invasion.
Comprising a larger eastern fortress and smaller western one connected by a fortified corridor with outer walls, it belonged to Romanian voivodes like Balc and Drag in 1378, defended against Tatar raids and brief Polish occupations, and served as a detention site under various Transylvanian princes including Mihai Viteazul in 1599.
Destroyed by a 1718 gunpowder explosion under Habsburg orders to prevent anti-imperial use, its ruins now blend into the forested landscape, accessible by trail as a key site of Maramureș's medieval heritage tied to the autonomous Țara Chioarului region.
