Cetatea Ciacova
Ciacova, Romania, Romania
Cetatea Ciacova, located in Ciacova town, Timiș County, Romania, was constructed between 1392 and 1395 as a medieval fortress surrounded by a network of canals for enhanced defense, making it notoriously difficult to conquer.
Owned initially by the Csáky brothers Miklós and György, it was gifted to King Sigismund of Luxembourg in 1395 in exchange for Transylvanian properties, later falling to Ottoman forces on September 18, 1551, possibly due to betrayal by local Serbs.
Following the 1699 Treaty of Karlowitz, Habsburg commander Count Wolf of Oettingen ordered its destruction, leaving only a surviving culă (defense tower) amid ruins that reflect its turbulent history under Hungarian, Ottoman, and Austrian control.
