Cetatea Cuiești(Turcului)
Bocșa, Romania, Romania
Cetatea Cuiești (Turcului), perched on Buza Turcului hill near Bocșa in Caraș-Severin County, Romania, is a medieval fortress first documented in 1331 as a royal stronghold and district center, likely built earlier in the 14th century from thick stone walls over three meters wide, enclosing about 1,000 square meters with two defense towers and a deep defensive moat nearly 20 meters wide.
Associated with Romanian noble families like the Racoviță and cnezi guarding the Bârzava Valley, it endured Ottoman conquests, falling under Timișoara vilayet control before recapture in 1595 by George Borbely and repeated destruction in 1658, 1695, and later sieges between Turks, Transylvanian princes, and locals.
Now reduced to ruins including a preserved polygonal tower 10 meters high and 3.2 meters thick, it was rediscovered and partially restored in 2024 through local efforts, marking Banat's oldest attested district with ties to pre-Magyar defenses.
