Cetatea de Scaun a Sucevei
Suceava, Romania, Romania
Cetatea de Scaun a Sucevei, located on the eastern edge of Suceava, Romania, is a medieval fortress built in the late 14th century by Petru I Mușat as the seat of Moldavian rulers for nearly 200 years.
Ștefan cel Mare significantly fortified it in the 15th century, adding defensive features like a moat, counterscarp wall, and an outer circular enclosure around the original rectangular Fort Mușatin, making it a key stronghold against Ottoman and Polish invasions.
Destroyed in 1675 on orders from Dumitrașcu Cantacuzino, it lay in ruins for centuries before restoration efforts from the 1960s and a major reconstruction project opened it as a museum, preserving its historical architecture and offering views over the Suceava valley.
