Cetatea Fagetului
Romania, Romania
Cetatea Făgetului is a medieval fortress in Făget, Timiș County, Romania, first documented in 1548 as a powerful stronghold protecting a thriving market town amid the upper Bega River valley.
Owned by the Ban of Lugoj from 1594-1602, it endured fierce battles between Romanians, Turks, and Austrians for 150 years before Turks destroyed it in 1602 and fully demolished it in 1699, leaving ruins confirmed by archaeological digs.
Turkish traveler Evliya Çelebi described its formidable state in 1660, highlighting its role as a key Banat border defense now marked as an archaeological site (LMI code TM-I-s-A-06059).
