Cetatea Fetei
Florești, Romania, Romania
Cetatea Fetei in Florești, Romania, near Cluj-Napoca, is a medieval fortress built before 1241 as an observation post against Tatar invasions, perched on a forested hilltop at about 600 meters elevation with elliptical ruins measuring 60 by 35 meters, surrounded by earthworks and ditches.
Archaeological digs in the early 1990s uncovered an unusual combination of a 4.4-meter-thick wooden palisade backed by a stone wall, unique for Transylvania, likely destroyed around 1437 during the Bobâlna peasant uprising when its role shifted to the new fortress at Gilău.
Its name stems from a local legend of a brave village girl tortured by Tatars in 1241 who refused to betray her hidden neighbors, leaving today just faint ruins, a well with a blocked underground tunnel rumored to link to Cluj's St. Michael Church, and a site blending history with folklore.
