Verified Cetatea Grădețului

Schitu Topolnitei, Romania, Romania

Cetatea Grădețului, located near Schitu Topolnitei in Mehedinți County, Romania, on Dealul Grădeț overlooking the Topolnița Valley, is a medieval fortress from the 13th-14th centuries whose origins remain mysterious, possibly built by local feudal lords early in the 13th century before destruction in the 1241 Mongol invasion, or reconstructed late 14th century under Wallachian voivodes controlling the Banat of Severin.

Archaeological excavations in 1964-1965 revealed an irregular polygonal enclosure (25x40m) with 2-2.5m thick walls of rough schist stones and mortar, a southern gate with hasty repairs suggesting siege damage, a northern semi-circular two-story donjon, and a central circular tower of finer masonry indicating multiple construction phases, alongside 13th-14th century pottery, horse bones, and spurs hinting at cavalry garrison.

First noted in a 1430 document as abandoned and long mistaken for Dacian ruins by 19th-century explorers like Cezar Bolliac, its crude hasty build reflects urgent defense needs in Oltenia's frontier, leaving today faint overgrown ruins as a classified historic monument (LMI MH-I-s-B-10051).
