Cetatea Greavilor
Gârbova, Romania, Romania
Cetatea Greavilor in Gârbova, Romania, is a medieval Saxon fortress built in the second half of the 13th century by the local Saxon greav (earl) Herbord de Wrbow as a noble residence, featuring a circular walled enclosure and a central donjon tower.
In the 15th century, it was sold to the community, which fortified it further with thick stone walls, a two-story gate tower known as the "Turnul Slaninilor" (Bacon Tower) for storing food reserves during sieges, and converted the donjon into a clock tower by the late 19th century.
This Transylvanian landmark, dominating the village landscape amid the Secașel Plateau, reflects Saxon defensive architecture against invasions and stands as a preserved cultural relic today.
