Cetatea Orăștiei
Orăștie, Romania, Romania
Cetatea Orăștiei in Orăștie, Romania, is a medieval fortress complex built around 1300 by Saxon settlers as a rectangular stone enclosure measuring about 91 by 84.5 meters, featuring thick walls (1.55-1.70m), defense towers, a moat with water, and a drawbridge for protection against invasions. It endured Turkish attacks in 1438 and 1479, a siege in 1561, and renovations in 1631, evolving with bastions added after 1400 and later expansions in the 16th-17th centuries, eventually becoming central to the town's community life. Recently restored with EU funds over several years and reopened around 2024-2025, it now houses historic churches and ruins, serving as a key tourist site showcasing Transylvanian Saxon heritage.
