It endured Turkish attacks in 1438 and 1479, a siege in 1561, and renovations in 1631, evolving with bastions added after 1400 and later expansions in the 16th-17th centuries, eventually becoming central to the town's community life. Recently restored with EU funds over several years and reopened around 2024-2025, it now houses historic churches and ruins, serving as a key tourist site showcasing Transylvanian Saxon heritage.
