Cetatea Trăscăului
Romania, Romania
Cetatea Trăscăului, also known as Cetatea Colțești, is a medieval fortress built around 1296 by vice-voivode Illés Thorotzkay on a steep limestone cliff in the Trascău Mountains near Colțești village in Alba County, Romania, serving as both a noble residence and refuge after the 1241 Mongol invasion devastated local settlements.
The structure features two prominent towers, including a 20-meter northern one bearing a stone inscription detailing its construction by the Thorotzkay family, which faced confiscation by King Matthias Corvinus in 1470, peasant devastation under Gheorghe Doja in 1514, and final destruction in 1703 by Austrian imperial troops during the Kuruc revolt.
Today, substantial wall remnants and towers offer panoramic views over the Trascău Depression and Rimetea area, paired with legends of underground tunnels and a tragic count's daughter, marking it as a key Apuseni hiking landmark.
