Cetatea Valcău, situated near Sub Cetate in Valcău de Jos commune, Sălaj County, Romania, was constructed in the second half of the 13th century on Plai Hill following the 1241 Tatar invasion to defend the southwestern region against threats from directions like Nușfalău–Zăuan–Ip. Strategically positioned where the Barcău River naturally served as an eastern moat, it played a key role in regional history and feudal conflicts, eventually passing to the Bánffy family amid noble power struggles. Now reduced to ruins from centuries of degradation, it remains a historical landmark overlooking the landscape, part of a defensive system in the former Crasna County.
