Cetatea Vurpăr (Zebernicului)
Romania, Romania
Cetatea Vurpăr (also known as Cetatea Zebernicului), located near Vurpăr village in Alba County, Romania, is a medieval Saxon fortress first documented in the 14th century, rebuilt by local German settlers after burning down in 1450 to serve as a defensive refuge against invasions in Transylvania's Mureș Valley.
Positioned on a hilltop with two poorly preserved earthen ramparts visible mainly on the north side, a flattened southern ditch, and traces of prehistoric settlements from the 4th-3rd centuries BC featuring handmade pottery and cattle bones, it reflects layered Dacian, Roman-era, and later Saxon fortifications.
Today, the heavily eroded ruins attract hikers, history enthusiasts, and Hutterite pilgrims tracing Anabaptist roots from the 17th century when Ottoman armies camped nearby, standing as a testament to Transylvania's multicultural defensive heritage.
