Château Pèlerin Crusader Fortress
Atlit, Israel, Israel
Château Pèlerin, also known as Pilgrim Castle or Atlit Castle, is a remarkable Crusader fortress built by the Knights Templar starting in 1218 on a rocky promontory about 2 km north of modern Atlit, Israel, along the Mediterranean coast south of Haifa.
Renowned as one of the strongest Crusader strongholds, it featured massive double walls up to 30 meters high, a secure harbor, and capacity for 4,000 troops during sieges, withstanding assaults by Ayyubid and Mamluk forces without ever falling in battle due to its innovative concentric defenses and strategic seaside location.
Abandoned voluntarily by the Templars in 1291 after Acre's fall, the site endured until an 1837 earthquake and later quarrying, and today lies within a restricted Israeli naval base, accessible mainly for archaeological study.
