Chirag Gala
Azerbaijan, Azerbaijan
Chirag Gala is a ruined ancient fortress in northern Azerbaijan, meaning “lamp castle” in Azerbaijani, and it sits on a mountain peak in the Guba Forest overlooking the Caspian coastal plains north of Baku.
It was built by the Sassanid Persians in the 5th century as a strategic lookout and signal post, where fires could be lit to warn nearby fortresses such as Baku and Derbent of approaching enemies, which is how the site earned its name.
Today Chirag Gala survives as a picturesque, rocky‑walled tower complex with several surviving towers, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and attracting hikers and history‑oriented tourists who make the roughly 6‑kilometre climb from the nearby village of Dashlig Yanar.
