Chufut-Kale
Ukraine, Ukraine
Chufut-Kale in Crimea, Ukraine, is a medieval cave city-fortress perched on a rocky plateau near Bakhchysarai, originating in the 5th-6th centuries as a Byzantine outpost for Gothic and Alan tribes, later evolving into a fortified settlement known as Kyrk-Yer or "Fortress of Forty."
Flourishing from the 10th-14th centuries with over 200 caves carved for homes, temples, granaries, and cisterns, plus surface walls, gates, and Karaite kenassas, it served as the Crimean Khanate's first capital under Hacı I Giray before shifting to Bakhchysarai, housing diverse populations including Crimean Karaites until Tatar dominance in the 16th-18th centuries led to abandonment.
Today, these UNESCO tentative ruins preserve layered fortifications, a 14th-century mosque, and panoramic canyon views as a national monument symbolizing Crimean multiculturalism amid Gothic, Tatar, and Karaite legacies.
