Verified Cidadela de Cascais

Cascais, Portugal, Portugal

Cidadela de Cascais is a historic fortress complex in Cascais, Portugal, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and the Tagus River estuary.

Originally built starting in the late 15th century under King John II with the Tower of Santo António around 1488, it expanded during Spanish rule in the late 16th century into a triangular-shaped Fortress of Nossa Senhora da Luz to defend Lisbon from naval attacks.

Fortifications continued through the 17th century, including post-1640 independence upgrades, though it suffered damage in the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. By the 19th century, as military needs declined, King Luís I converted the governor's residence into a royal summer palace in 1870, popularizing Cascais as a seaside retreat for nobility who built villas nearby.

Today, the site features preserved medieval walls and towers, the preserved palace now part of a luxury hotel, art galleries, a museum, restaurants, and a scenic courtyard, drawing visitors for its blend of history, culture, and coastal views.
