Clanx Castle
Switzerland, Switzerland
Clanx Castle, known as Burgruine Clanx, is a ruined medieval fortress on a hilltop near Appenzell in the canton of Appenzell Innerrhoden, Switzerland, first documented in 1219.
Built at the start of the 13th century by Abbot Ulrich von Sax of St. Gallen and his brother Heinrich to safeguard abbey lands and oversee trade routes, it featured a large square keep, residential building, curtain wall, and corner tower as the region's biggest castle complex.
Besieged and destroyed in 1289 by Habsburg forces, rebuilt in 1302, it served as a bailiff seat until Appenzell rebels burned it in 1402 during conflicts with St. Gallen, leaving preserved foundations revealed by 1940s excavations amid scenic alpine views.
