Cloondooan Castle, also known locally as Boston Castle, is a ruined medieval tower house near the village of Boston in County Clare, Ireland.
Built by the O’Brien family, it occupied a strategic position overlooking important routes through the Burren region and was regarded as one of the strongest fortified castles in the area. The castle is most famous for the siege of 1586, when Sir Richard Bingham’s forces attacked it.
After a lengthy defense led by Mahon O’Brien, the castle was captured and partially destroyed, leaving it in ruins. Today, only sections of the tower remain, including part of a tall north wall rising dramatically above the surrounding countryside. Despite its ruined state, the castle remains an impressive landmark and an important reminder of the turbulent history of medieval County Clare.
