Conacul Nako
Sânnicolau Mare, Romania, Romania
Conacul Nako in Sânnicolau Mare, Timiș County, Romania, was built in 1864 by Count Kálmán Nakó, of Aromanian origin from the Nacu family who maghiarized their name after converting to Catholicism, designed in neoclassical style with medieval influences by renowned architect Miklós Ybl.
The impressive U-shaped structure features over 90 rooms centered around a prominent medieval-inspired tower, surrounded by a vast park with rare tree species, and once housed a rich collection of art, books, statues, and correspondence from figures like Franz Liszt and Richard Wagner.
Following World War I occupations and nationalization, it served as Romania's first agricultural school, a legionary headquarters, barracks, and worker training center before becoming the Béla Bartók Memorial Museum in 1981, now functioning as the City Museum and House of Culture amid restoration efforts.
