Coolnamuck Castle

Coolnamuck Castle is a late 16th-century tower house located near the River Suir in County Waterford, Ireland.

It was built around 1588 by Gerald Wall and his wife Catherine Commerford and remained associated with the Wall family for many years. The castle was originally a fortified residence surrounded by a large square defensive enclosure, known as a bawn, with corner towers and strong defensive features such as musket loops, guardrooms, and a machicolation for protecting the entrance.

Its strategic position near a ravine and water source added to its defenses. Today, the castle survives as a picturesque ruin, with only parts of the main tower and enclosure walls still standing. Although much of the structure has been lost to time, it remains an important example of Ireland’s tower-house architecture and a reminder of the region’s medieval and early modern heritage.
