Verified Cor Castle

Sutton, Dublin, Ireland

Cor Castle, also known as Corr Castle or Caisleán an Chorraigh, is a well-preserved fifteenth-century L-shaped tower house located in Sutton, Dublin, Ireland, within the historic Howth Demesne.

Thought to have been built by the White family, the castle served as a defensive residence and lookout point guarding the isthmus at Sutton—the main land route to Howth Castle and its port. Ownership later passed to Christopher St Lawrence, 8th Baron Howth, in the late 16th century, likely leading to upgrades.

Corr Castle was part of the Howth Park Racecourse from 1829 to 1842, serving as a distinctive grandstand along the race circuit. Over time, the surrounding lands were quarried, but the castle itself has remained structurally intact, retaining features like battlements, turrets, and a corbelled roof chamber.

Today, the castle is protected as a historic monument and is integrated within a private apartment complex, visible to the public but secured. Archaeological findings around it reveal habitation dating back to the 13th and 14th centuries. The castle’s architectural and historical significance reflects its role in local defense, status, and leisure across centuries.
