Dangan Castle
Republic of Ireland, Ireland
Dangan Castle is a historic ruined estate near Summerhill in County Meath, Ireland, best known for its connection to the Wellesley family.
The site originated as a medieval manor and castle, later becoming the ancestral home of the family of Arthur Wellesley, who would go on to become the 1st Duke of Wellington and defeat Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo. During the 18th century, the original castle was replaced by a grand country house surrounded by extensive gardens and landscaped grounds.
The estate became one of the most important residences in the area, reflecting the wealth and status of the Wellesley family. After the property was sold, a devastating fire in 1809 left much of the house in ruins, and it was never fully restored. Today, the remains of Dangan Castle stand as a reminder of both medieval Meath and the early life of one of Europe’s most famous military leaders.
