Danjugan Island
Philippines , Philippines
Danjugan Island is a 43-hectare (110-acre) uninhabited island in Barangay Bulata, Cauayan, Negros Occidental, Philippines, managed as a marine and wildlife sanctuary by the Philippine Reef and Rainforest Conservation Foundation, Inc. (PRRCFI) since 1994 to protect biodiversity and promote ecotourism.
It lies about 5 km off the west coast of Negros in the Sulu Sea and features five lagoons (three landlocked, two flooded at high tide), limestone and mangrove forests, bat caves, fringing coral reefs, white-sand beaches, seagrass beds, and eight thriving ecosystems overall, making it a nature paradise with no human residents.
The island is a known nesting ground for Philippine megapodes (scrubfowl), sea turtles, and fruit bats, and supports wildlife such as white-bellied sea eagles, white-collared kingfishers, seahorses, lionfish, and nine bat species in its caves, while the surrounding waters host hornfish, flying fish, Napoleon wrasse, giant manta rays, and even whale sharks.
