Daugavgrīva Fortress is a historic military fortification located near the mouth of the Daugava River in Riga.

Built by the Swedes in the 17th century, it was designed in a star-shaped layout to protect Riga’s important harbor and trade routes from attacks coming from the Baltic Sea. Over the centuries, the fortress was controlled by Swedish, Polish, Russian, German, and Latvian authorities, and it played a role in numerous conflicts, including the Great Northern War and World War I.

It also became associated with the formation of some of the earliest Latvian military units. Today, Daugavgrīva Fortress stands as an important monument of Latvia’s military heritage. Although partly in ruins, its walls, bastions, and tunnels still reflect its former strategic significance, while its riverside location provides visitors with a unique blend of history, architecture, and coastal scenery.
