Daugavpils Fortress, located in Daugavpils in Latvia’s Latgale Region, is a massive early 19th-century military complex and one of the city’s most important landmarks.

Construction began in 1810 under the orders of Tsar Alexander I to strengthen the western frontier of the Russian Empire before Napoleon’s invasion, and the fortress was completed in 1878. The fortress is unique because it is the only military fortification of its type in Northern Europe that has survived largely unchanged. Spread across more than 150 hectares, it includes bastions, ramparts, gates, moats, and a planned military town with historic administrative and residential buildings.

Over the years, the fortress served different armies and military institutions, and today it has become a major cultural and historical attraction. Visitors can explore its impressive architecture, learn about its military past, and visit the Mark Rothko Art Centre, making Daugavpils Fortress one of the most remarkable heritage sites in Latvia.
