Verified Dezna Fortress

Romania, Romania

Dezna Fortress, perched on Ozoiu Hill at 390 meters in Dezna, Arad County, Romania, dates to the late 13th century, likely built by King Béla IV after the Mongol invasion as a key royal citadel in a Romanian principality.

First documented in 1317 and donated to the Losonczi family in 1318, it gained prominence in the 16th-17th centuries as a western Transylvanian border defense, reinforced under Ioan Sigismund from 1565 with Renaissance-style additions like a northeastern bastion and parallel stone walls filled with river stones and mortar.

Captured by Turks in 1574, recaptured by 1596, held briefly by Michael the Brave's captain Gáspar Kornis (1599-1601), and gifted to Marcu-Cercel Vodă in 1619, it fell again to Ottoman forces in 1658 alongside Ineu, fading as a fortification thereafter.

Today, its modest polygonal ruins feature a surviving tower, bastion walls, inner court outlines, and ditch remnants, reflecting simple yet strategically vital construction owned by royalty and nobles.
